How to use these twelve tactics
A Business Profile helps eligible businesses communicate accurate information in Google Search and Maps. This checklist covers maintenance and customer experience, not a formula for a map position. Local visibility also depends on factors you cannot change, including the searcher's distance. Assign an owner and record review dates so errors do not remain unresolved. These tactics are grounded in Google's operating guidance; they do not establish a guaranteed ranking effect for each individual edit.
1. Confirm eligibility and ownership
Check that the business qualifies and that an authorized person controls the profile. Complete the verification requested and document account recovery and permissions. Resolve an existing profile before creating another for the same business. A virtual address should not imply a staffed customer-facing location that does not exist. If ownership has changed, use the relevant ownership process rather than starting an unnecessary duplicate listing.
2. Use the real business identity
Use the name customers recognize from signage and real-world materials. Do not add services or cities merely to target searches. Check the website and profile for a consistent identity. A new branch and a renamed business are different situations; document what changed before editing. Make sure staff handling calls also use the same business name so the customer's experience is consistent.
3. Choose an accurate primary category
Pick the category describing the core business and add only applicable secondary categories. Review these when the actual offering changes, not whenever rankings fluctuate. Do not select unrelated categories to broaden reach. Keep a service inventory so anyone maintaining the profile understands why the categories were selected. Category selection should reflect the business, rather than an aspiration to attract unrelated enquiries.
4. Maintain the address or service area
Show a customer-facing address only where appropriate under the guidelines. Configure a travelling provider's service area accurately and hide the address where required. Adding distant areas does not move the underlying business closer to searchers. Check the map pin and give practical arrival information on the website. Avoid implying that every named town contains a staffed branch.
5. Keep hours current
Update holiday hours, closures and genuine seasonal changes. Check the public listing afterwards. Assign this to someone who knows the operating schedule. Incorrect hours can waste a customer's journey even when other information is complete. Coordinate the profile, website and booking system when hours change so customers do not receive conflicting instructions about appointments.
6. Describe services clearly
Add services that can actually be booked and explain appointment requirements or exclusions. Where prices appear, state conditions instead of an unqualified starting figure. Keep the linked service page consistent. For a hypothetical repair business, distinguish diagnostic visits from completed repairs and explain whether parts are included. Clear scope is more useful than repeating the same search phrase.
7. Add authentic photographs
Show the entrance, environment, team and representative work with permission. Choose images that help customers recognize the business. No universal photo-count threshold guarantees visibility. Replace misleading or obsolete images instead of uploading solely to meet a quota. Do not use stock photographs to imply a facility, employee or completed customer project that is not yours.
8. Make the contact path work
Test the phone, website and booking links on a customer's device. The former Business Profile chat and call-history features ended in July 2024. Do not follow instructions to enable that retired chat system. Text or WhatsApp options may be available to eligible accounts; use the options actually offered for your profile and region, and confirm who will answer them.
9. Publish relevant updates
Use updates for useful announcements, events or offers with clear dates and conditions. A weekly posting schedule is not a guaranteed ranking bonus. Check destination links and whether an offer remains valid when someone sees it. Assign an expiry review. Avoid leaving an old event as the most prominent information a customer encounters after discovering your business.
10. Request honest reviews
Invite customers to describe real experiences and make the review link easy to use. Do not offer rewards or request feedback only from likely five-star reviewers. No required count or average guarantees a local-pack position. Reply helpfully without disclosing private details. Establish a consistent request process and review problematic feedback against the platform's policies rather than trying to suppress legitimate criticism.
11. Reconcile important listings
Correct material errors in relevant directories and professional listings, such as an old address or disconnected phone. Choose listings your customers use rather than bulk submissions to unrelated directories. Keep a record of ownership and access. A consistent real-world identity is the goal; minor punctuation differences are not a reason to delay fixing a genuinely wrong branch address.
12. Review actions and enquiries
Compare available profile performance with qualified enquiries and bookings. Use a tagged website link where appropriate and record missed-call handling separately. A call-button interaction does not prove a sale. Review trends alongside holidays, promotions and staffing changes. Keep the information accurate even when short-term visibility fluctuates, and investigate service quality or response problems before assuming every lost enquiry requires more traffic.
